Nearly 13,000 people have registered for the Rwanda Day event scheduled for February 2-3 in the United States capital, Washington D.C., according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Preparations are in advanced stages for the event in which thousands of members of the Rwandan community abroad and friends of the country can engage directly with President Paul Kagame.

Discussions centre on the Rwandan diaspora’s contribution to the country’s development, a celebration of its cultural values, and ways to foster relationships with people from all over the world.

The 11th edition of Rwanda Day will take place as the country prepares for the 30th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, presidential and parliamentary elections in July, 30th liberation anniversary among other key national events.

“We are well prepared for the event, the embassy and the senior leadership of our country are working together to ensure that it goes well,” said Arthur Asiimwe, Deputy Head of Mission in the Rwandan embassy in the US, during a live-streamed conversation with North Dakota-based media personality Ally Soudy.

The two-day event, which will take place at Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center, will be opened by a business forum attended by 400-500 people on Friday and the main part of it will be on Saturday.

Asiimwe said the forum will bring together Rwandan businesspeople from the country and in the diaspora as well as American investors for trade-centred engagements.

“We are prepared to host Rwandans and friends of Rwanda,” he said, adding that more people were still registering for places in the event.

On Saturday’s agenda are panel discussions about Rwanda’s security and its position in the global scene, and available opportunities for the youth.

Then there will be the President’s speech, followed by his interactions with the delegates.

The first Rwanda Day event since the Covid-19 pandemic will take place less than 10 days after the 19th National Umushyikirano Council, held in Kigali where Rwandans discussed the country’s development, national unity, and the role of the youth leadership in all sectors.

The last event was held in October 2019 in Bonn, Germany.

The event comes at a time when remittance from the Rwandan diaspora reached a record high of $470 million in 2023 – exceeding foreign direct investment inflows, according to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning. The remittances rose from $65 million in 2010.

On the sidelines of the Rwanda Day event, more activities are planned, including entertainment and exhibitions by government institutions as well as private sector actors.

There is also the Rwanda Day Career Corner, which will support recent graduates and seasoned professionals looking for job opportunities. - Moise M. Bahati, The New Times

January 4, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that it had recalled its ambassador to Kenya, Kamal Jubbara, in protest against the official reception hosted by the Kenyan government for Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo “Hemetti,” the commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), on Wednesday.

In a statement to the Sudan News Agency, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq stated that Sudan had recalled its ambassador for consultations to express its strong disapproval of the Kenyan government’s “official reception of the leader of the rebel militia (Hemetti) upon his visit there yesterday.”

Al-Sadiq further condemned Kenya for failing to acknowledge the “terrible abuses” committed by the RSF, including the destruction of infrastructure, the country’s capabilities, and civilians’ property.

He said that the consultations with the ambassador would explore all possible avenues regarding the future of Sudan’s relations with “Kenya, which has been accused of supporting the rebellion in Sudan, hosting its leaders and supporters, and conspiring with hostile regional powers against Sudan”.

Over the past few days, Hemetti has met with the leaders of Uganda, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and South Africa. He received official receptions with a guard of honours at the Addis Ababa airport, while he was welcomed with traditional dances at Nairobi airport before meeting President William Ruto at the presidential palace.

In contrast, the receptions hosted by President Museveni and President Cyril Ramaphosa were limited to their respective private residences, outside the presidential palaces.

Prior to this incident, Sudan’s Sovereign Council President Abdel Fattah al-Burhan had warned against treating the commander of the RSF, which is engaged in hostilities against the Sudanese army, as a legitimate representative of the Sudanese state. He had also stated that Sudan would take “appropriate measures” in response to such a reception.

It is worth noting that all heads of diplomatic missions have left Sudan and have chosen to establish offices in Port Sudan instead.

Sudan had already rejected Kenya’s chairmanship of an IGAD quartet group tasked with the resolution of the Sudanese conflict. The military-led government said that Ruto had a business relationship with Hemetti and he was not neutral. - Sudan Tribune

After losing development support from the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in the past seven years, Tanzania has convinced Washington to review its earlier decision to suspend funding to key social and economic projects in the country.

The MCC Board has put Tanzania among African countries to get financial and institutional support after closing its offices in Dar es Salaam in 2016 in protest against the general election results in Zanzibar.

The MCC had invested $700 million in electricity production and supply to urban and rural areas between 2008 and 2013.

Other key projects were roads, water supply in rural areas, education and health services.

The US embassy in Dar es Salaam said this week that Tanzania had demonstrated renewed commitment to advancing critical reforms to strengthen democracy, protect human rights and fight corruption.

The MCC Board has, therefore, decided to partner with Dodoma to focus on policy and institutional reforms aimed at reducing poverty and promoting economic growth.

Global poverty

Established in 2004, MCC is an independent US government agency working to reduce global poverty through economic growth through grants and assistance to countries that execute good governance, fight corruption and respect democratic rights. The reinstatement of the MCC funding comes a year after President Samia Suluhu Hassan met with the MCC Chief Executive Alice Albright in Washington DC on December 14, 2022.

President Samia has reversed some contentious measures that restricted democratic space, proclaiming a 4R philosophy—reforms, reconciliation, rebuilding and resilience, targeting to change the politics and economics in the country.

Finance Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has visited the MCC in the US three times in the past two years, lobbying for the reinstatement of funding.

The MCC directors said shortly after the 2015 General Election that the government had ignored the concerns of the US and the international community over the voting in Zanzibar, which the opposition Civic United Front claimed to have won but Dodoma authorised a re-run-in favour of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi.
